Directing the Room Without Micromanaging It

How DungeonOPC combines authored pattern metadata, boundary-driven selection, bounded accents, and semantic operator guidance.

Once a lighting system contains more than a handful of visuals, making another pattern is no longer the only creative problem. Someone—or something—has to decide what belongs in the room now, what should wait, and whether a sharp accent will strengthen a musical moment or simply interrupt it. I wanted DungeonOPC to feel directed rather than shuffled, without forcing an upstream music service or a human operator to micromanage Unity scene objects.

The foundation is an authored pattern catalog. Each visual has more than an ID and display name: it carries roles, useful intensity and tempo ranges, colorability, cue and mood affinities, idle suitability, estimated spatial coverage, and separate eligibility as a primary field or a short-lived accent. It also has a position on a two-dimensional guidance surface and default performance controls. Keeping this material in one catalog means a designer can tune the vocabulary of the show without duplicating the same facts across scene bindings, API code, and selection logic.

DungeonOPC remains the final local decision-maker. Music state can describe the current track, playback state, tempo, cue, energy, palette, and broader character, but it does not reach inside Unity and name a pattern. The selector filters the catalog down to visuals that are both eligible and actually registered in the scene, then scores those candidates for the current state. A pattern that can clearly carry a requested palette is favored over a merely suggestive mood match; energy range, fixture coverage, tempo, cue, playback state, and semantic roles add further context. Calm, idle-compatible work is preferable when playback stops, while aggressive accents need stronger evidence before they enter.

Scoring continuously would be easy. Switching continuously would be awful. The orchestrator therefore treats selection as a boundary-driven decision. Track, cue, playback-state, and major energy changes can open a commit point, as can musical phrase boundaries and a meaningful movement on the guidance surface. Minimum dwell times and a score margin keep a narrowly better candidate from displacing a visual that has only just established itself. At phrase boundaries, recent-use penalties and excitement-aware variety can widen the vocabulary without turning the result into random rotation.

Primary patterns and accents follow different policies. The primary supplies continuity; overlays such as impacts, lasers, or strobes are scored and scheduled as bounded events. An operator can choose named transition speeds, energy bias, preferred roles, allow or block lists, and overlay density. Those choices alter dwell, hysteresis, thresholds, counts, and duration rather than bypassing the system. An exact override is also available when a moment calls for it, but its lifetime is explicit: it can hold until the next cue, then return control cleanly to automatic selection.

For more immediate performance, I added a guidance plane whose horizontal axis runs from organic to synthetic and whose vertical axis runs from sparse to dense. Moving across it is a semantic gesture, not a direct request for a particular effect. The point biases nearby catalog entries and also shapes intensity, speed, blend, reactivity, transition pace, and accent density. Music-derived guidance stays in the mix, while a recent user gesture receives greater weight for a short lease and then fades away. Because this input is ephemeral, an operator can lean into a dense synthetic passage and let go without leaving the installation stuck in a forgotten configuration.

This architecture also makes the system explainable. Diagnostics retain the active pattern, the last selection reason and commit boundary, lock state, fallback reason, active automatic overlays, and top candidate scores. When the room makes a surprising choice, the answer is available as state rather than folklore.

The result is a useful division of creative responsibility. Music services describe what is happening, the catalog describes what each visual is good at, the operator supplies broad intent, and DungeonOPC makes the local choice with stability and restraint. That lifts show operation above button-by-button control while preserving a deliberate way to intervene.
