One Tick at a Time: How the Sanctuary Keeps Living
Server-authoritative ticks let the sanctuary keep changing even when no keeper is watching.
Polinaria World keeps its authority on the server. The browser presents the map and sends attributed keeper actions, but the world's clock, jobs, resource movement, weather, degradation, incidents, and herd decisions advance through simulation ticks. That makes the sanctuary a shared state rather than a separate copy living in each player's tab.
Every tick contributes to several overlapping fields. Buildings can create production, shade, noise, dust, service capacity, or component risk. Routes can move stock while accumulating wear and disturbing herd crossings. Weather modifies solar output, maintenance, logistics, and stress. Incidents temporarily reshape those pressures and give players bounded response choices rather than simply spawning enemies.
The herds read the consequences. Their needs and memories influence where they move; local comfort and danger change the value of sites; cognition objects create structured interactions that depend on trust, repetition, environmental context, and prior experience. Infrastructure therefore affects animals through the world model, not merely through scripted quests.
Persistent storage, timelines, reports, return cards, and compact snapshots translate all that activity back into a human rhythm. A keeper can leave, return later, and understand what changed, who acted, what failed, what the herds learned, and where attention is needed next. The technical architecture serves the product fantasy: Tau Ceti 42 should feel as if it continues to exist when nobody is watching.
